Un tumor del alma lleno de pus. Si madura, explotará, emanando un horrible hedor. Toma ya. No se andaba con chiquitas Evegrio, quien tiene decenas de definiciones para los soberbios, casi todas ellas hermanadas por una cualidad de altura desde la cual los pecadores contemplan al resto de la humanidad, pero desde la que también se arriesgan a descalabrarse. En cualquier caso, y dentro del seno de la Iglesia, se considera uno de los peores pecados capitales pues fue el que precipitó a Lucifer a los infiernos.

La soberbia se equipara al orgullo desmedido. A ese creerse por encima del bien y del mal y de mirar a los demás por encima del hombro. Tenía clara la actitud, la pose que debía mostrar la modelo y más que encontrarla me encontró ella a mí. En cuanto la vi, supe que sería mi representación de la soberbia. No era especialmente bella, pero de su mirada surgía claramente el desprecio por el que se encontraba bajo su nivel. Y como no me gusta que me miren así, pues decidí vengarme y utilizarla como base para la soberbia.  Quizás la venganza debería ser incluida en esta lista de vicios…  Ahí lo dejo.

Quería colores fríos, acordes con su mirada de desprecio, así que gris y plata me parecieron la combinación ideal. El plata simboliza la frialdad y el distanciamiento por sí mismo, de ahí el fondo del cuadro. Y el azul, que resulta tan combinable e interpretable dependiendo de la combinación cromática que se elija, en este caso resalta la frialdad y es por definición uno de los colores del orgullo.

La técnica no requiere mucho comentario ya que el retrato ha sido pintado de forma tradicional, pero con una única singularidad. Está hecho alla prima, o lo que es lo mismo, en una sola sesión de unas dos horas y sin correcciones o retoques posteriores.  Los soberbios es lo que tienen, se sienten superiores a los demás y no necesitan corregirse.

A tumor of the soul full of pus. If it ripens it shall blow up emanating a terrible odour. There you go. Our Evagrius did not use to beat about the bush. He had dozens of definitions for the arrogant and all of them share a component of “height” from where they look down on the other human beings but from where they risk falling down and breaking into pieces. Anyhow, within the Church, the sin of pride is considered very serious since it was the one that made Lucifer plunge into the hells.

Pride is equated with excessive haughtiness, with believing oneself beyond good and evil and looking to the others over the shoulder. The attitude of my model was clear in my mind and more than finding the right picture I can say it was de picture that found me. As soon as my eyes came to rest on the image I knew she would be “my Pride”. She was not particularly beautiful, but her gaze suggested very clearly the contempt she felt for those under her level. I don’t like being looked down like that so I decided to take my revenge and use her as a basis for the pride. Revenge might also be included in the list of vices… Just an idea.

I was looking for cold colours, matching her gaze of contempt, so I saw grey and silver as the ideal combination. Silver symbolizes coolness and detachment by itself and that was the combination chosen for the background. And, although very all-round and versatile colour depending on the chromatic combination chosen, blue in this case stresses the coolness, being by definition one of the colours for pride itself.

There is not much to mention on the technique since it has been painted in a traditional way, but with one particularity. The work was done alla prima, that is in one single session of about two hours with no further corrections or touch-ups. This is also a feature defining pride people, they feel superior to others and do not need to correct themselves.
