¡Ay, la lujuria! La serpiente que incita al hombre al pecado. La mujer que inyecta el veneno de la pasión en el inocente hombre. Ya lo advertía Evegrio:  Mirar a una mujer es como un dardo venenoso, hiere el alma, nos inocula el veneno y cuanto más perdura, tanto más arraiga la infección.

La lujuria (en latín, luxus, ‘abundancia’, ‘exuberancia’) es usualmente considerada como el pecado producido por los pensamientos excesivos de naturaleza sexual, o un deseo sexual desordenado e incontrolable. Actualmente se considera lujuria a la compulsión sexual o adicción a las relaciones sexuales, una categoría en la que entran tanto el adulterio como la violación.

Pero pocos y pocas reconocen en la lujuria su principal pecado.  Ni siquiera le dan un segundo puesto, tampoco aquellos y aquellas que me consta que lo practican. Me pregunto si es uno de los vicios que más en secreto llevamos. Tendría lógica. Sea o no el menos confesado, he de decir que no es ni mucho menos el más repudiado entre los pecados. Quizás porque… ¿volvemos a tirar la piedra?

En cualquier caso, cómo he querido darle forma a la Lujuria. Pues claro está, con un rostro femenino que, históricamente y desde que el arte es arte, ha sido la encarnación del pecado sexual.  La protagonista se encuentra recostada, con su brazo izquierdo por encima de la cabeza  y con los ojos entrecerrados. Sus labios, carnosos y sensuales se localizan en primer término y en el punto principal del lienzo.  La boca es, en este caso, el principal objeto de lujuria para el espectador.

En cuanto a colores, sí, volvemos al rosa fucsia —femenino, rebelde— pero en este caso le unimos otros dos colores que van a resultar esenciales para definir lo que nos traemos entre manos. Echo mano de Heller para comentaros una curiosidad que a mí me ha llamado mucho la atención. Con un buen porcentaje de rojo en un cuadro y una pequeña ración de rosa, podemos representar el Amor. Pero… y esto es lo curioso, añadimos otro tanto de negro o de violeta, y tenemos ante nosotros la viva encarnación de la sexualidad o del erotismo. Está clara ahora la elección de colores, ¿verdad? Ojalá pudiéramos discernir con semejante claridad en las relaciones como en la representación pictórica.

En cuanto a la técnica, también he utilizado pintura acrílica sobre lienzo. El fondo lo pinté de rojo carmesí y una vez seco, definí las partes de luz con el rosa y las partes de sombra con el negro y el violeta. Por cierto, que como este pecado es realmente oscuro, su castigo eterno, según la Santa Madre Iglesia, era consumirse en el fuego y el azufre. De ahí el esgrafiado  en forma de ondas —ver detalle— que sirven para acentuar que nuestra protagonista se está consumiendo ya en vida entre las llamas del averno.

Oh boy, Lust! The snake inciting the man towards sin. The woman injecting the poisonous passion into the innocent man. The monk Evegrio already warned us about it: To look at a woman is like a poisonous dart, it hurts your soul, it releases venom and the longer it takes, the deeper the infection roots.

Lust (from the latin luxus “abundance”) is usually described as the sin originated by excessive thoughts of a sexual nature or a dishevelled and unrestrained sexual desire. In our days, lust is referred to as sex craving or addiction to sexual intercourse. Both adultery and raping are included in this category.

There are few people who admit lust to be their main vice. It does not even reach the second place for those who allegedly practise it. I wonder if this is our most secret vice. It would make sense. Whether it is or not the most acknowledged vice, it is by no means the most repudiated. Again, who is the one throwing the first stone?

Anyhow, how have I shaped my idea of Lust. Of course, featuring a female face because since the beginning of art the woman has been the incarnation of the sexual sins. Our main character is lying on her back with the left arm above her head and half-closed eyes. Her full and sensual lips are located in the foreground in the main point of reference of the canvas. Her mouth is in this case the main object of lust for the viewer.

As for the colour combination, yes, we come back to our fuchsia pink -feminine, rebel- together with two other shades essential to define the conception we are dealing with. I fall back on Heller to comment a curiosity that has attracted my attention. With a high proportion of red colour and a low proportion of pink we can represent Love in a picture. But, and this is the fascinating issue, if we just add another low share of black and purple, the very image of sexuality and erotism is right in front of us. I hope my election of colours is clear for you now, is it? I wish we could make such a clear difference in real life with our relationships!

Regarding the technique, I have also used acrylic paint on canvas. I painted the background in crimson red and after drying I defined the light areas with pink and the shadow areas with purple and black. By the way, since according to the Holy Catholic Church Lust is one of the darkest sins, the relevant eternal punishment would consist of being consumed by fire and sulphur. That is why I have made use of some sgraffito or scratching in a ripple-like manner (see detail below) to stress that our woman is already being consumed in life in the flames of the Averno.
