Our good monk Evegrio said that if you surrender to the desire to eat nothing will suffice to satisfy your pleasure: the desire to eat is, indeed, like the fire that everything engulfs and always becomes inflamed.

According to the present understanding of the Catholic Church, gluttony is not limited to the excess of food and beverage, but also to some ways of destructive behaviour like the substance abuse or drunkenness.

Gluttony is however and at the grass-roots level one of the most forgivable vices and probably the most-shared one since, a priori, does not harm any other than ourselves. And note I have said a priori because gluttony is mostly thought of as overeating. So, he who is without sin among you, throw a stone first. I will definitely not be the first one.

So, how do I envisage my character. I see her as a young and happy woman, in a carefree environment, with a rounded and harmonious face. Her eyes are closed because all the interest is driven to the mouth, door of entrance for this particular sin, and where the tongue licks whatever she has just tasted or with anticipation for what she is about to enjoy.

For my representation I have used acrylic paint in pastel and neon shades. I have chosen pink for the face because it represents all the typical female attributes but stressing this fact with both bubblegum pink and magenta or fuchsia pink since this is the shrillest colour there is. I wanted its chromatic effect dominating upon the others as a symbol of defiance against temperance, which is the virtue that should temper the excessive desire for food.

I have chosen opposite colours for the background (green, blue) but in their pastel shade so that they do not interfere with the foreground and because they are appealing and sweet colours at the same time (we only need to have a look to the dominant colours in candy shops). The election of horizontal stripes and ostensibly chaotic neon paintbrushes helps to generate a joyful and happy environment. Who could sink its teeth into whatever this young girl has just eaten or is about to eat!
