Guau.

Hice. Quité. Añadí. Corregí. Lijé. Volví a añadir.

***English Version***

Wow! I love this sin and was very much looking forward to it. I have left it to the end because the monk Evagrius did not mention it and included in his list the so-called Vainglory instead, something like Vanity. But as I have decided to be traditional, I have omitted the vanitas vanitatis and jumped to the invidere, Latin word which roughly means “to fix one’s stare on something” and that in classical literature is applied to concepts such as ill-will, malevolence, jealousy, hostility and, funny enough, also to the so called evil eye!

When I previously said I loved this sin I was not really meaning I did love it or I did practice it often, nor even to the fact that it was a defect I turned a blind eye upon. No way. I think it is a vicious and ugly vice very few people admit to and many people practice but I love it because it is soooo easy to represent from an artistic point of view! And I had that representation such a long time ago in my mind waiting for its opportunity to come to the light! And even if it has been the last sin to talk about it was the first to be conceived and represented, in a couple of sessions and with full and firm conviction.

The pose of the model was ideal for my purpose. I did not have to search much. Her glare was perfect and evil, the perfect embodiment of the Latin definition of fixing one’s stare on something or someone. Boy, I would not like to be the recipient of such an evil eye!

As for the colour, I also had it clear from the very beginning, yellow. Nevertheless, people around I usually listen to from an artistic and aesthetic point of view saw envy green. I looked once again for the advice of Heller and found under Yellow a chapter devoted to envy, jealousy and lies. It literally says envy is the source of perpetual suffering and it declares the envious person to be irritable and bilious. When the bile enters the blood flow our skin turns yellowish, jaundice (from the French “jaune” or yellow), so the justification for yellow for the envious is more than proven. On top of it, Heller adds an etymological basis, the closeness of two words in English and French for yellow and jealous (jaune-jalousie in French). There it is!

My envious girl underwent several construction and destruction stages, always on the basis of an egg-yellow background on top of which I added a blueish watered layer to obtain the greenish and venomous yellow I was looking for. What I did not touch from the beginning was that tremendous envious glare nor the lips that bite and twist because of the suffering of our model. Don’t ask me to detail the production steps because they were quick and sometimes overlapped one another. I painted. I deleted. I added. I corrected. I sanded. I added something again. And finally I gave it some touches of fluorescent yellow to finish it off. You can see some stages of the process here below.

Final note: If you have read me this far either you have not much to do or you are really into the subject. If this is the case, I will be happy to hear your comments. Sins, vices, defects or however you call them are a very interesting subject and we can all learn and share our artistica and philosophical ideas.

Gracias por escucharme/leerme y un saludo / Thanks for reading/listening to me!
